#6. "Belong" - Washed Out
(Mirror Universe)

Ernest Greene is Washed Out."Belong", taken from his cassette only release, "High Times", eschews obvious cliches in the current 80's synth pop revivalism while still maintaining that era's summer vacation feel. The big drum roll, the chorus effect on the vocals, and the understated synth line are all used to stunning effect. The lo-fi quality of the recording is also very refreshing.

#7. "Love and Let Love" - Gossip
(Columbia)

"Music for Men" the fourth studio album from Gossip is a winner. A juxtaposition of art rock and modern dance punk with a pop twist that makes it all work. This song, taken from the b-side of the album, perfectly encapsulates where the band is at musically; massive bass lines, snappy drums, whiny guitar strains, and Beth Ditto's commanding soulful voice letting you have it!

#8. "Psychic Ciy" (Classixx Remix ) - Yacht
(DFA)

What initially starts off as a basic beat with a nice bass line quickly melds into sunny island sounding synths with the emotive and slightly dead pan vocals of Claire L. Evans. Classixx takes the original and strips it down to the best parts, making it sound leaner, faster, and eliminating some of the distracting elements. The results are quite spectacular and the finished production fits perfectly with the DFA sound: bass heavy. dubby, insistent, dreamy, and of course, catchy as hell! I hate to quote Pitchfork, but they said, "Gorgeously pillowy synth-disco". Indeed.

#9. "Kilometer" (Aeroplane Italo '84 Remix) - Sebastien Tellier
(Record Makers)

The boys from Aeroplane had a couple of amazing remixes floating around and this one was one of the first of 2009 that caught my ears. Aeroplane take Italo Disco as a starting point for the remix and venture into the land of chunky pads, Giorgio Morodor style synth bass, and early Breakin' style Electro while not really falling into any of those genres. The moaning female vocals in the song are also a nice touch, dressing the top of this retro styled slice of 80's dance funk beautifully. Sebastien Tellier always makes great records, this is no exception!

#10. "The Deep End" (Holy Ghost! Remix) - Curses!
(Institubes Records)
One of the records that I heard everywhere I went that didn't make me cringe. The original mix is fantastic but Holy Ghost! bring the New York Disco vibe with their remix and take the song to a new level. The Holy Ghost! remix chugs along dropping layers upon layers of classy funk and ornate basslines in it's wake, by the time the vocals float in you are in Heaven! A FUTURE CLASSIC!

When I think about the golden days of disco, the thing that repeatedly pops in my mind is how the music was really great, polished, and smooth; but also forward thinking and carefree. One of my favorite disco songs is "Over & Over" by Sylvester, originally released in 1977. It is one of the most beautiful and delightful songs I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

Suede were formed in London in 1989 by bassist Mat Osman, singer Brett Anderson and his then girlfriend, Justine Frischmann, on rhythm guitar. They soon added guitarist Bernard Butler who was recruited through an advertisement in Melody Maker and used a drum machine as percussion. Suede were signed to RML Records, a label from Brighton. Comedian Ricky Gervais managed the band for a brief period before they were signed to a record label. With Mike Joyce (formerly of The Smiths) famously filling in as drummer. Even before Suede's first album appeared in stores, Anderson's androgynous style and vague "confessions" about his sexuality stirred controversy in the British music press. In 1993, Suede hit number one on the UK charts. Combining Morrissey's homoerotic posturing with David Bowie's glam theatrics, Anderson achieved instant fame in the UK.

Elastica was formed in mid-1992 by ex-Suede guitarist Justine Frischmann and ex-Spitfire and Suede drummer Justin Welch. By the autumn of that year, bassist Annie Holland and guitarist Donna Matthews (ex-Darling Buds) were added. After initially rehearsing, recording and gigging under names such as Vaseline and Onk, the band settled on the name Elastica in early 1993 because of legal threats from The Vaselines. Their first single was 1993's "Stutter", which benefited from the promotional efforts of BBC Radio 1 DJ and Deceptive Records label boss Steve Lamacq who had discovered the band earlier in the year. In 1994 Elastica released two UK top 20 singles, "Line Up" and "Connection," and performed on numerous radio shows. In addition Frischmann's relationship with Blur's Damon Albarn made tabloid headlines, thus creating further buzz about the band.

Imperial Teen first gained notice with their debut album, Seasick, in 1996, which was produced by Steve McDonald (Redd Kross). Spin Magazine went on to list it as the 4th best album of the year, and in the top 50 albums of all time. Of the "queer alt-rockers Imperial Teen", one New York Times reviewer wrote that "though every song on the album is good, the best are the ones about homosexuality ("Butch"), Kurt Cobain ("You're One"), and complete nonsense ("Imperial Teen").

Antony and the Johnsons return with, "Another World", an EP of beautifully understated pop. The EP's sophistication relies on the spare use of instrumentation and Antony Hegarty's fragile voice gliding above the melacholy, melting our hearts once again with its solemn tone. The EP is the precursor to the band's new LP, "The Crying Light", scheduled for a January 2009 release. Gracing the cover is Pierre-Olivier Deschamps' 1984 image of Japanese butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno. A sublime image for arresting music.

Leigh Bowery, notorious for the outrageous costumes he wore for his performances on the club scene was, unusually for Freud, an experienced model. Bowery sat for Freud over the course of two years, as often as five days a week. 'The bonus is the quietness', he said of this experience. 'You get a different sense of yourself. It's nice to have that level of attention. And a tension.' By this stage, Freud had started enlarging his paintings as they developed, gaining room to work but also altering the proportions. This one grew more than most: Freud added strips to the side and about a third as much again to the bottom. Bowery is particularly naked, having not only removed all traces of his outrageous costumes, but also all the hair from his body, which he shaved before sitting to Freud. The painter found Bowery's skin curiously translucent, 'Like being able to see underneath the carpet'.
